DIY Chicken Coop Construction Part 1 - Floor and Base

The first thing we did is to build our base for the chicken coop.  Using your plans, lay out all the materials you will need to build the base. This helps you to stay organized and on task with your project. 

We laid out the 2 x 4's for the base and then measured all of the center points for the studs along the top and bottom cap rails so that screwing them in place would be quick and easy.  We used screws on this project in lieu of nails but this is really personal preference on your part. 

Next you want to screw every thing together. We went for a layout of 24" on centers to save a little bit on wood costs and this is more than sufficient for the size and type of structure we are building.

It is very important that keep these frames square and that can be accomplished by measuring diagonally across the corners and tweaking the frame until the measurement is exactly equal in both directions.

We then measured and cut our 4 x 4 posts that were going to be the piers for our chicken coop.  We built this upside down for ease of construction.  We decided on the four corners and two center piers for support and this has proven to be very stable configuration for our coop once they were set on their concrete footings and buried in place.

Flip your base over at this point so you can begin building the chicken coop main floor.
